Location: Gourdon
Department: Alpes-Maritimes
Region: Provence

Description:

Pale gold walls holding the sunlight, warm red roof tiles, arched window embrasures, looking out over the tiny village around it … the first sight of this chateau is one of timeless beauty.  Dating from the 13th Century (actually 965 AD – but why split hairs?) this wonderful chateau has been home to families whose names are part of French history….. truly, its history reads as an account of the loves and marriages of the highest of the French aristocracy.  Having survived for six centuries, through all the changes that the world experienced,  the chateau was tragically allowed to fall into disrepair…  the wonderful stonework details became blurred, walls needed restoring, roofs replacing…. Enter our hero – the current owner – who started a labour of love in 2005 – and who has now restored this marvelous collection of buildings to their former glory.

The chateau is now a testament to his tenacity and – above all – his determination to ” restore ” – the stonework above wall embrasures  would now be instantly recognized by a 14th Century owner… the flagstone floors and the dressed stone walls bear witness to the centuries when the chateau was loved and used.  What Jennifer and I most admire is the seamless addition of all the conveniences of modern living to a building that must be reveling in the good taste that has enabled it to live again…  giving a vast 1,200 square metres of living space to be used as the next owner/ guardian chooses.  Part of the chateau is currently set aside for use as utterly top class gites…. exquisitely furnished and in keeping with the age of the building …   the vaulted wine cellars host wine tastings…  and a tiring day exploring the countryside can be soaked away in the spa that is  – again – an inspired marriage between modernity, practicality and the glamour of the ancient stones… an ideal, upscale income stream/investment property as well as a magical family home.

Situated in the heart of the rural Lot department, 30 km from Cahors and 35km from Sarlat in the Dordogne, 7km from the A20 motorway paris-toulouse… the location is a perfect balance between convenient access and tranquility.

If we have not said it clearly enough, we are proud to be able to list this “one-of-a-kind property”… your Camelot awaits!
